A group of hunger strikers has set up camp on the sidewalk next to City Hall. They’re Home Care Aides hoping to see their bill put to a vote in the City Council. At issue is banning the 24 hour work shift that they say is unhealthy for workers, unsafe for their clients, and a financial ripoff because they’re not paid for all 24 hours. Organizers explained that the ‘No More 24‘ bill was first introduced in 2022 but never given a vote by then Speaker Adrienne Adams. It was re-introduced this year by CM Christopher Marte as Intro 303 and has 17 co-sponsors. As of last night, the new Speaker Julie Menim has not brought the bill for a vote. The Hunger Strikers’ aim is to persuade Speaker Menim to allow the Council to vote on it. The organizers say they are hopeful it will pass when that happens.
