Wildfires across Canada have produced so much smoke that even NYC has been blanketed with smog. Yesterday, for example, the AQI (Air Quality Index) soared above the 200 level, indicating the air was “very unhealthy.”

Today’s AQI is lower, but still elevated, according to this NotifyNYC Alert:

Alert issued 07-17-2026 at 08:12 AM.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in all or part of NYC has reached Level Red (AQI between 151-200) – Unhealthy, and is unhealthy for everyone, especially sensitive groups (older adults, children/teenagers, outdoor workers, and those with medical conditions such as heart or lung disease or respiratory issues such as asthma).

Recommended Actions:

Everyone: Reduce strenuous outdoor activity. Take extra breaks when outdoors.

Sensitive Groups: Avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Consider rescheduling or moving outdoor activities indoors. Monitor for symptoms related to air quality such as coughing or shortness of breath. If you have asthma, keep your quick-relief medicine on-hand.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected this weekend. New Yorkers are encouraged to keep an eye on catch basins and keep them clear to prevent flooding, if it’s safe to do so.

Notification issued 07-17-2026 at 10:01 AM.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected across NYC from Saturday, 7/18 into Sunday morning, 7/19. Help prevent street flooding by clearing leaves and debris from catch basins near your home if it is safe to do so. If you’re cleaning catch basin grates, be sure to wear gloves & watch out for traffic.

You can also report a clogged catch basin by calling 311 or submitting online at https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-01084.
