Stakeout!

They’ve come from all the World over, camped out for days downtown in the cold and rain, to document what just might be the greatest show on Earth at the moment. It feels a little like the circus is in town. Any day now, as the media has been hyping for a week, former President Trump is expected to surrender to the authorities at 100 Centre Street in Manhattan. When he does, it’ll presumably produce the mugshot seen ’round the World.

The Gazette has crisscrossed the general area several times lately for unrelated reasons and each time the press stakeout has seemed bigger and more international. Last week, local news orgs had tentatively claimed territory with the best camera angles. A week later there are more media outfits on the ground, and their turf has been more defiantly marked out with bike rack barriers and crudely taped logos on the pavement. The funny thing is that when the moment comes for Trump’s limo to drop him off for booking, they may be shooed away from the spots they’ve been occupying 24/7 since the first rumors flew. Between NYPD and Secret Service handling a high priority and historic event like a former President’s arrest, it wouldn’t be very surprising to see them err on the side of extreme caution.

Sipping a hot coffee yesterday one shivering reporter wondered why, after a several years long run up to this moment, the D.A couldn’t have waited one more week for the weather to warm up a bit. As of the latest rumors, the main event will take place this Tuesday.

Here’s a collage showing the media crews camped out across from 100 Centre Street on Friday, March 31.
