Freezing Rent

Tenant advocates made the case on Tuesday evening at Symphony Space for a rent freeze. The final Rent Guidelines Board public hearing before the panel votes on June 25th drew about a hundred attendees. Those wishing to address the Board were required to sign up in advance and, when called, to limit their statements to just a few minutes. For the most part it was tenant after tenant testifying that an increase would be a hardship and, in some cases, even force them to move. One person, speaking in favor of an increase, was loudly boo’d by the audience. CAAAV (Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence) and Make the Road NY members also addressed the Board. Last year, the Board approved increases of 3% for one-year leases and 4.5% for two-year leases.
