Spring was in the air yesterday in Inwood. Signs that Winter was finally over were all around – the warm temperature, a Good Friday church procession, Opening Day at the Stadium, the new Inwood Art Works venue prepping for its opening day, and the flowers that bloom in the Spring blooming in front of Dyckman Farmhouse on Broadway.
Hundreds of the faithful walked through the neighborhood, beginning and ending at Good Shepherd Church on Isham Street. They followed the Cross and stopped often to pray, as altar servers swung an incense burner and NYPD held back traffic. In Tubby Hook what looked like half the Fire Department enjoyed an afternoon off together watching the Yankees beat the Marlins 8-2 on big TV screens.
The SS Fish Market on Sherman Avenue was filled with people shopping for a holy day meatless supper. Near the corner of Seaman and W204, Inwood Artworks Founder Aaron Simms was getting the org’s new studio ready. And on the site of the old Rite Aid on Broadway, workers were putting finishing touches on a new neighborhood business. The sign above it read “Peoples Department Stores. Since 1971.”
Coming soon: a department store.
