Yesterday’s installment of the No Kings series of mobilizations in NYC and around the World drew a record number of activists. Here, in NYC, the event took the form of a mass march from Central Park down to 34th Street. It began with two streams of marchers, one heading down Broadway and the other down 7th Avenue. When they reached the Crossroads, the streams joined forces and continued as one on 7th. Although an attendance estimate was not provided by official sources, subjectively this seemed at least as large as the previous two and likely bigger. The number 7 million was cited by some news sources for last October’s mobilization (nationally).
The march spread from curb to curb in a fairly tight formation for more than three hours. Overhead shots showed the mile plus route filled with marchers throughout the afternoon. The atmosphere was relaxed, determined, and judging by some the signs, fed up. A number of signs aimed vulgar taunts at President Trump, specifically branding him a pedophile, war criminal, dictator and so on. While there were police everywhere, no arrests were reported and no confrontations were observed. The organizers provided ample staff to direct the marchers through Times Square and to pause them occasionally to allow a few crosstown vehicles through.
Signage was the main form of messaging once again, but there were also chants and some singing breaks. Almost all of the signs appeared to be handmade and many deployed humor and original art to convey variations on the main themes of no kings/pro Democracy, anti war in Iran, and rejection of aggressive immigration enforcement by ICE. News media reports and organizers said more than 3,000 mobilizations took place nationally. In fact, one of the stated goals of the day’s activity was to mobilize Americans who might be at a distance from or unable to travel to a city. This was echoed Worldwide with partner No Kings events in Europe and Asia, again according to news reports.
Here are some views of the marchers and their signs in Midtown yesterday:
Correction: an earlier version of this post misidentified antiwar signs as referencing ‘Iraq’ not ‘Iran’ war.
