Rep. Adriano Espaillat

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement in reflection of the January 6th attack at the United States Capitol five years ago today.

Rep. Espaillat submitted testimony during a special hearing led by the Rep. Bennie Thompson and the Members of the January 6th Select Committee that may be watched here.

“Today marks the solemn fifth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the Capitol, a violent insurrection incited by Donald Trump as thousands of his supporters attempted to stop the peaceful transfer of power,” said Espaillat. “I was there, prepared to discharge the duties of my office and certify the election like we have following every general election since our nation’s founding 250 years ago. Thankfully, as a result of the extraordinary bravery of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement, their attempt to overturn the 2020 election failed. Tragically, more than 140 police officers were seriously injured and several lost their lives. We will never forget the horrors of January 6th and will forever show a deep appreciation to the men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police, who saved Democracy and countless lives while defending the rule of law in the United States that day.”
