America was shocked this afternoon as reports of an assassination attempt on former President and current candidate Donald Trump began to land. On social media partisans of all stripes condemned the act and political violence generally. While details remain scarce and confirmation shaky, here’s what we’ve heard so far: Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, PA when shots rang out. He raised his hand to his right ear as his protective Secret Service detail formed a human shield around him and swiftly evacuated him offstage. On his way to the vehicle Trump appeared to have blood on his face, apparently from being hit by a bullet. He pumped his fist as he got into the vehicle and left.

Meanwhile, there are news reports that the perp is DOA and that other rally attendees were also struck by gunfire. President Biden condemned the attempt and reiterated the message that political violence is unacceptable saying, “It’s sick. It’s sick.” He is reportedly going to address the nation later this evening. ABC News cites the Butler County DA stating that the shooter and one bystander are confirmed dead at the rally.

The Trump campaign released the following statement, “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”
