They came from far and wide last Sunday, wearing amazing handmade costumes, to celebrate Carnival in Santo Domingo. The parade started around 2PM and proceeded along the Capital’s Malecon for nearly six more hours. Just about every city and town across the Dominican Republic sent a delegation to represent them in this big event. Many of the costumes reflected the country’s African, Spanish and Indigenous heritage, while others referenced popular movies or patriotic themes. The weather was perfect, sunny but not too hot. The parade route ran along the water’s edge and a refreshing sea breeze helped the elaborately costumed participants to stay cool.

Here are some photos from the event and a short (4 minutes) video on YouTube with many more.
