Hundreds of people gathered yesterday in Times Square to celebrate Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. Beautifully costumed dancers and musicians entertained the crowd with top notch performances on a stage located at West 47th and Broadway.
Senator Chuck Schumer popped by to oversee the lighting of a gigantic Diwali billboard a few blocks down from the festivities.
New York’s Governor, Kathy Hochul won over the crowd with a heartfelt address that related the theme of light triumphing over darkness to New York’s resurrection from a terrible pandemic year. She went on to broadly praise immigrants for being the very heart and soul of New York and of America, and declaring they will always be welcome here because they make America better.
She then joined several Indian American dignitaries in lighting a Diwali lamp in observance of the holiday.
