Right Off Broadway

October 1, 2021

Near Payson. MOME presents Off Broadway in the Boros Fest, a performance series bringing free, open-air theater to the masses. Today’s installment was literally right off Broadway, between Seaman and Payson Avenues. The parking lot next to Tread Bikes was temporarily turned into a backstage area where performers and some municipal functionaries gathered under a tent.

The show opened with an upbeat introduction by MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo.

That was followed by a brief onstage exchange between Frank DiLella, of NY1 “On Stage” and Candace Bushnell, the writer behind Sex And the City who revealed she’s the real-life inspiration for Carrie Bradshaw. Asked by DiLella if there’s still sex in the City, Bushnell said there is, but less.

The cast of Stomp swept onstage with an assortment of brooms, buckets and trash can lids with which they stomped out an energetic set that was well received by the audience of around sixty people. Yassir Tejada and Palotré rocked the block like it was 4 in the morning not 4 the afternoon.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer got up and said a few words in support of the Arts and Inwood. The Hell’s Kitchen Happiness Krewe played a sharp set. Finally, Luis Salgado’s Dance Troupe took the stage and performed a rousing set to close the show.
