Midtown sidewalks were jam packed on Sunday (August 10) as tens of thousands of Dominicans, Dominican Americans, and Dominicans for a Day came out to march in and support the 43rd annual Dominican Day Parade. The weather was perfect, seemingly imported directly from the tropical Caribbean island so many here call home: warm and sunny with a delightful breeze. The crowds were 10, 20 and even 30 people deep along the route as floats blasting merengue passed and a million (Gazette estimate) flags were waved. There were a lot of young people out celebrating, both in the parade itself and on the sidewalks along the route. Well into the afternoon the festivities continued, with no end in sight. In fact, even aside from the parade itself, the spirit of Quisqueya was everywhere you went in Midtown Sunday, with bunches of revelers sporting big Dominican Republic flags worn like capes spotted as far west as 9th Avenue!
