Governor Kathy Hochul today directed flags to be lowered at half staff to honor the lives of more than 200 individuals who were killed in the tragic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Multiple victims have been identified as New Yorkers.
“Our hearts break for our beloved neighbors in the Dominican Republic who are grieving a massive loss,” Governor Hochul said. “This week I have spoken to key leaders, including the Dominican Consul General in New York and Congressman Adriano Espaillat, to express our condolences and discuss ways to partner in the future. With more than 1 million people of Dominican descent in the Empire State, the ties between New York and the Dominican Republic remain unshakeable.”
New York has the largest Dominican population of any U.S. State. In recent years, Governor Hochul has expressed her support for the Dominican community and strengthened cultural and economic collaboration between New York State and the Dominican Republic. The Governor has highlighted $1.5 million in State funding for the Dominican Studies Institute at City College and established $12.5 million to create a Dominican Center for the Arts and Culture in northern Manhattan, because she believes New York would not be the community that it is without Dominican Americans.
Flags will be lowered from Saturday, April 12 to Sunday, April 13.

La gobernadora Kathy Hochul ordenó hoy que las banderas ondearan a media asta en honor a las más de 200 personas fallecidas en el trágico derrumbe del techo del club nocturno Jet Set en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana. Varias víctimas han sido identificadas como neoyorquinos.
“Nos conmueve profundamente la pérdida de nuestros queridos vecinos en la República Dominicana”, declaró la gobernadora Hochul. “Esta semana he hablado con líderes claves, incluyendo al Cónsul General de la República Dominicana en Nueva York y al congresista Adriano Espaillat, para expresar nuestras condolencias y dialogar sobre cómo colaborar en el futuro. Con más de un millón de personas de ascendencia dominicana en el Empire State, los lazos entre Nueva York y la República Dominicana siguen siendo inquebrantables”.
Nueva York tiene la mayor población dominicana de todos los estados en North América. En los últimos años, la gobernadora Hochul ha expresado su apoyo a la comunidad dominicana y ha fortalecido la colaboración cultural y económica entre el estado de Nueva York y la República Dominicana. La Gobernadora ha destacado $1.5 millones en fondos estatales para el Instituto de Estudios Dominicanos en el City College y ha establecido $12.5 millones para crear un Centro Dominicano para las Artes y la Cultura en el norte de Manhattan, porque cree que Nueva York no sería la comunidad que es sin los dominicanos estadounidenses.
Las banderas estarán a media asta desde el sábado 12 de abril al domingo 13 de abril.
