Activists mobilized across the country today with a blunt message for President Trump: “Hands Off!” It came after a little more than two months of the new admin moving fast and breaking things, a management style tech moguls are said to favor. Tens of thousands of Federal Civil Servants have been summarily fired, entire Departments and programs have been eliminated, and people have been abducted and deported off the street by masked government agents without the slightest bit of due process. This week Trump’s tariff EO disrupted international trade, crashed the stock market, and threatened the livelihood of many whose business relies on imports or exports.
Trump signed the Tariff EO on Wednesday.
Against this background and the inability or unwillingness of Congress to mitigate it, the #Resistance, an opposition movement born in Trump’s first term, came roaring back to life today. In virtually every major city from coast to coast, huge throngs of activists mobilized to send a message to Washington: hands off Medicare and Social, hands off Democracy, Hands off Public Education, hands off My 401k, and even hands off Greenland. In New York City the march was estimated at a hundred thousand and stretched for almost a mile on 5th Avenue, according to social media sources that posted photos.
Tens of thousands mobilized in all the big cities including Boston, DC, and Chicago, and large crowds also showed up in smaller ones such Orlando, Grand Rapids. and St. Paul. Today’s activity was the first expression of mass, non-violent opposition to the policies of the Trump Administration, but it almost certainly won’t be the last.
