More than 1,500 students of migrant families in temporary housing have enrolled in Northern Manhattan’s public schools since July 2022, according to Cheryl Pahaham, Co-Chair, Inwood Legal Action (ILA). On Thursday evening, February 20, community members gathered in the Fort Washington Collegiate Church for a forum on immigration featuring NY State Senator Robert Jackson, Community Activist Johanna Garcia, and a panel of immigrant advocates. The topic was how to protect our community and build sustainable mutual aid for newcomers. Representatives from NYSAG Office, Defender Service of Harlem, Malikah, NMCIR and Interfaith Center of NY presented information and answered questions posed by community members.
