With a new year beginning next week it’s time once again for the Gazette‘s Year In Pics edition. Say what you will about 2024, there can be little doubt that 2025 will exceed it. Next year looks to be one of nonstop drama with Donald Trump returning to the White House next month and vowing to deport millions, go after his adversaries, and be a dictator for one day.

A construction accident this afternoon in Inwood sent five people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to FDNY. A boom truck was working at a building going up on 9th Avenue near the University Heights Bridge, Flair Beverages, and the MTA train yard when the accident occurred. January 9, 2024*

The morning commute was snarled today after a vicious, predawn attack on a subway worker led to delays caused by a police investigation and subway workers’ safety concerns while the perp remained at large and possibly still in the subway system. February 29,2024.

Mobilizations against the war in Gaza have now spread to college campuses across the country. In addition to Columbia, NYU, CCNY and FIT have seen protest activity this week, as have Princeton, USC and Ohio State, among others. April 26, 2024.

Former President Donald Trump held a rally in Crotona Park on Thursday evening. The event drew thousands of hardcore MAGA devotees as well as some simply curious New Yorkers and a much smaller number of protesters. May 25, 2024.

Central Park played host to a monumental day of advocacy and action today, where 60,000 global citizens gathered to hear world leaders, philanthropists, and the private sector make historic commitments in response to their advocacy, having taken a record-breaking 3.4 million actions on Global Citizen’s platforms. Several brush fires broke out this afternoon within the confines of Inwood Hill Park. FDNY dispatched multiple apparatus to extinguish fires throughout the park from Spuyten Duyvil on down to Dyckman Street. November 13, 2024.

Today, the New York Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, issued a historic decision in favor of 250,000 Medicare-eligible retired New York City workers and their dependents. The Court held that the City must continue to pay the entire cost of any health insurance plan retirees select, thus preserving their right to City-funded Medicare supplemental insurance. The Court issued a unanimous decision affirming the victories achieved by the retirees in the lower courts. December 18, 2024.
