Several brush fires broke out this afternoon within the confines of Inwood Hill Park. FDNY dispatched multiple apparatus to extinguish fires throughout the park from Spuyten Duyvil on down to Dyckman Street. A RAC Unit and an EMS team were deployed to West 207th Street and Seaman Avenue. Police and news helicopters hovered noisily overhead. Meanwhile, heavy smoke conditions blanketed the neighborhood, prompting many residents to remain indoors or mask up if going outside. The smell of smoke was strong and the air was hazy as the sun began to set. As night fell, FDNY continued to battle fires. Red Flag brush fire warnings have been frequently issued recently due to the lack of rainfall and strong winds. The region was immersed in foul-smelling smoke from a fire in New Jersey earlier this week.
