The Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan has hosted many victory parades, but today’s was special. For the first time in the team’s history, the New York Liberty won the WNBA Championship by beating the Minnesota Lynx in Game 5. Thousands of fans lined Broadway to greet the champions. Riding up the stem from Battery Park on floats and a double decker bus were the 2024 WNBA Champs, the Mayor, the Governor, a US Senator, and the team’s owners. Liberty players Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and MVP Jonquel Jones waved to the fans as they made their way uptown.

The weather was perfect for a parade. It was sunny and mild with just a light breeze, and ribbons of ticker tape wafted down lazily from skyscrapers along the route. There were also tons of confetti blown skyward from parade vehicles that created a scene resembling a blizzard at times. Following the trip through the Canyon the parade headed onto the City Hall campus where seating had been set up for a few hundred invitees. Mayor Adams honored the players with The Key to the City and the Governor said she hoped to be back in a couple of weeks for another Championship parade.
