It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over

The World Series came and went without making much of a splash given than no New York City or even regional teams like the Red Sox or Phillies were in it this year. And then the season was over because the Dark Half of the year begins when baseball ends, right? Well, not so fast! Baseball, the beloved game of Summer, continues beyond the Fall Classic down in the Dominican Republic. Here it’s always Summer and playing baseball, or just watching a game, is always a swell idea. The Gazette caught one here the other night at Estadio Quisqueya J.M in downtown Santo Domingo.

Aside from a good, competitive game that was fun to watch, what stood out was the relative affordability of this outing. We went with a group of almost a dozen people, paid to park two cars, bought everyone a hat and a few drinks and the whole tab barely hit a buck fifty. That’s about what we’d have spent for two people at Yankee Stadium without parking, drinks, and a dozen caps. Granted, there weren’t a lot of multi-million dollar players on the field here on Thursday night to justify sky high ticket prices, but the chance to become one may have made them hustle even harder than if there were. In any case, it was a great game all around. The Gigantes del Cibao had a tremendous 7th inning, adding 5 runs before going on to defeat the Tigres de Licey 9-5.

LiDom games here run from October thru December.
