This isn’t an Inwood story but, according to AP, it’s historic. Yesterday, for the first time in our nation’s history, Members of the House of Representatives voted successfully to “vacate the chair.” What that obscure term means is they ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from his role as Speaker of the House. The vote was 216-210. McCarthy will remain in the House as a Representative, and the Republicans will elect a new Speaker. The only other time a vote to vacate the chair took place, back in 1910, it failed to win a majority of the Members.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) introduced the Motion to Vacate.
