Labor Day arrived early for some New Yorkers yesterday, but not the one that unofficially ends Summer. AFSCME/DC37 and NYC Government agencies teamed up for a jobs fair in BK. The so called Hiring Hall was the latest in a series, #StafftheFrontLines, that has already led to about 2000 provisional job offers. Municipal agencies set out tables staffed with personnel ready to interact with job seekers. A line of potential applicants stretched all the way down the block from the entrance of Sunset Park HS almost to Industry City. Inside there were hundreds of more people investigating the job opportunities on offer. These were for jobs not requiring an exam, including many entry-level spots. If an applicant appeared qualified, they’d be sent directly for an on-site interview and possibly a job offer, according to Beatrice Thuo from DCAS.
Agencies on site included FDNY, NYPD, and another dozen alphabet departments such as HHC, DOT, ACS, DOE and NYCHA (complete list here). The Mayor and Union officials from DC37 dropped by as did about a dozen retirees protesting the City’s plan to change their medical coverage. A big green and blue bus from the Union was parked outside where it served as a billboard to promote the event.
