Yesterday was another Summer scorcher amidst the record breaking heatwave of 2023. Up in the Bronx, drag fans and performers gathered under the blazing afternoon Sun to keep last month’s Pride celebration going a little while longer. In keeping with our City’s indomitable Spirit of Freedom, acceptance and diversity, the event in Crotona Park stood in sharp contrast with new laws in some states banning drag performances. While people here remain free to get up on a stage and exercise their 1st Amendment Right to express themselves, Tennessee just made it a crime.

Queen of the Bronx Appolonia Cruz produced the 12th annual Bronx Pride Festival and Health Fair in the Park’s amphitheater. It’s the Boro’s longest running Pride event and yesterday’s turnout was good despite the sweltering heat. Official hosts Tym Moss (who’s been with Bronx Pride from its very beginning), Clover Welsh (aka Lady Clover Honey), Laura Martinez, and Wendy Stuart kept things moving as performers took their turns onstage. NY State Senator Luis R. Sepúlveda presented Stuart with an Official Proclamation recognizing her for exemplary service.
