An international flotilla de veleros (sailing ships) docked at Terminal Don Diego this week in observance of Velas Latinoamérica Santo Domingo 2022. Their enormous wooden masts towered high above the heads of curious visitors who had come downtown to take a free tour of these amazing vessels.
They were the Libertad, sailing from Argentina, the Cisne Branco from Brasil, Cuauhtémonc from México, Capitán Miranda from Uruguay, the Colombian patrol boat (with helicopter!) 20 de Julio, and the R.D. based buque escuela, Juan Bautista Cambiaso.
Fourth year Naval School Heroica Cadet David Garcia Hernandez (Above, sunglasses) informed the Gazette that his buque, the massive Cuauhtémonc, sailed out of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, México on Cinco de Mayo. From there they sailed down to Panama, across to Colombia, and then up to the Dominican Republic where they arrived earlier this week and joined the other tall ships in the Capital’s harbor. David said he was inspired to become a sailor by his father, Captain Crispin Garcia.
