Notify NYC

Notification issued 09-23-2021 at 11:50 AM.

The NYC Emergency Management Department has issued a travel advisory for Thursday, September 23 through Friday, September 24.  New Yorkers are advised to prepare for potential rain and thunderstorms this afternoon through Friday evening. The National Weather Service has forecast scattered thunderstorms that could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Maximum rainfall rates are forecast to potentially reach 1 inch per hour. The greatest chance of heavy rain and thunderstorms is from 6 p.m. Thursday through 2 a.m. Friday. There is also a potential for 60 mph wind gusts during periods of heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms.
Periods of heavy rain may result in urban flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. During periods of heavy rain, seek higher ground or, if in a basement, move to a higher floor. City agencies have taken action to clean catch basins and remove street litter in the event heavier rain occurs.
Thunderstorms may create dangerous travel conditions:
–  New Yorkers are advised to limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather.
–  If you must travel, exercise caution. Do not drive your vehicle or walk into areas where water covers the roadway as the water depth may be too great to allow you to cross safely.
–  If you are outside during a thunderstorm, avoid open areas and try to seek shelter indoors.
With the expected rain and wind this evening, New Yorkers celebrating the Succos holiday should take appropriate precautions with their Succah and outdoor furniture.
