Cancel Culture

Not that long ago the phrase ‘cancel culture’ signified not finding Louis CK funny anymore. But COVID-19 changed everything. Today sports, cultural and entertainment realms shed events off the calendar and venues off the map like psoriasis/in an abundance of caution/like there was no tomorrow. But don’t panic. Not yet, anyway.

  • NYC Mayor De Blasio declared a state of emergency.
  • NYS Governor Cuomo banned mass gatherings of 500+ people including
  • Broadway theaters closed starting today through April 12..
  • The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters closed indefinitely.
  • MLB cancelled Spring Training games and postponed Opening Day for at least two weeks.
  • NBA suspends season as player tests positive for coronavirus.
  • NHL ‘pauses’ season indefinitely.
  • NCAA cancels men’s and women’s basketball championships.
  • MLS (Soccer) suspended all games, effective immediately, for 30 days.
  • Disney theme parks to close for remainder of month after Sunday 3/15.
  • NYPL suspended all public-facing programs beginning Friday, March 13, through at least the end of March. This includes all events (classes, programs, workshops, etc.) at our 92 locations, which as of now remain open with regular operating hours.
  • The American Museum of Natural History closed indefinitely starting tomorrow (Friday 3/13).
  • Lincoln Center suspended performances all month.
  • All Catholic elementary schools within the Archdiocese of New York will close effective Monday, March 16, 2020, until Friday March 20, 2020, with the possibility of a lengthier closure.
  • Carnegie Hall has cancelled all performances through March 31.
