The Peace and Justice Committee of Uptown Progressive Action hosted a screening of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9 on Sunday afternoon at Holyrood Church on W179 Street.
“Join us for a showing of Michael Moore’s latest and perhaps his best film; an exploration of Trump, fascism and what can be done about it. Admission is free and there will be snacks, because NOTHING is too good for the working class!”
The film opens with a look back at the Presidential campaign of 2016 – the rallies, the media coverage, and Election Night’s surprise ending. It tells the story of the following two years with a well edited collection of clips. It goes into the Flint water crisis and the Parkland school shootings before catching up with the 2018 Blue Wave midterms.
In each instance, footage a viewer may not have seen before is shared (e.g. phone videos made inside the school during the MSD shootings, longshot AOC campaigning for Congress last summer, and a frightening nighttime military exercise in Flint). These clips contribute to a better understanding of this moment in history. Like his earlier Fahrenheit 9/11, this film is a cinematic time capsule future historians will likely appreciate. What both films also share is an unapologetic Left wing perspective, a scathing critique of the commercial news media, and Moore’s trademark guerilla verité style of film making that ranges from ballsy to hilarious.
