Flash flood warnings were in effect Friday night and heavy rain continued on and off Saturday. For some, that was reason enough to stay home. But for a small group of intrepid body painters and their models it just meant the show must go on. And so it did. Human Connection Arts was back in Midtown for another Bodypainting Day.
Executive Director Andy Golub, Human Connection Arts.
As always, the event was staged to address social issues including public nudity, street vs gallery art, and the human form as art rather than identity. They’ve been holding these events here since 2007 and in 2013 NYPD finally conceded that public nudity is legal for the sake of art.
One great thing about NYC is that you get a pretty wide lane to live in here. Fashion from every culture in the world is a common sight on our streets, and it’s a regular Tower of Babel of languages you sometimes can’t even name.
That’s why a bunch of people can shed their clothes and artists can paint them in the middle of a Times Square full of tourists and natives and not cause a stir. People strolling by came and went, some just throwing a quick glance and others hanging around for a little while to check it out. Many people also passed by without even noticing.
