Handmaid in Manhattan

July 31, 2018

Vice President Mike Pence and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen were in lower Manhattan today for the National Cybersecurity Summit at  the National Museum of the American Indian (aka Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House). Gathered outside was a group of women sporting costumes inspired by the 1985 novel and current TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale, set in a dystopian future where women, under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship, have no rights. The dissidents carried signs denouncing administration policies towards women’s rights and held aloft little children’s shoes, a reference to the family separation policy at the Mexican border.

Frederico G. from revcom.us told the Gazette that “Pelosi and Schumer keep urging people to wait in hopes the system will take care of it. It’s like they’re in a house with a tsunami coming and they’re just moving the furniture around.” Germany, he said, deceived itself into believing it couldn’t happen there, but it did. “Democratic (Party) leadership would prefer fascism,” he concluded.
