OTR: The Band’s Visit

June 14, 2018

This is an installment in the Gazette’s summer series “On The Road.”

What do you get when you play a country song backwards? The Country Legends, a tribute band from Toronto, didn’t answer that one but they did fill the streets of Lawrenceburg, Indiana with a lively set of music on Thursday evening. Just in from a gig in Buffalo and booked for another one tomorrow in Ohio, the band sounded remarkably fresh. They performed a tribute show of Zac Brown, Garth Brooks, and Keith Urban tunes as the sun set over the nearby Ohio River.

Drummer Ed Mortenson has been playing music for nearly three decades. He told the Gazette that Brown’s “Homegrown” is his favorite number the band performs. Downtown Lawrenceburg was filled with hundreds of folks ensconced on beach chairs, sipping cold drinks, and tapping their feet in time to the music. It was part of the Music on the River series of free events here. Tomorrow and Saturday the activity shifts to the river itself as the Whiskey City Regatta gets underway.
