Thousands of turbans were wound onto the heads of fashionable New Yorkers and visiting tourists today in Times Square. The occasion was Turban Day, an annual rite of Spring in midtown. The stated purpose of the free event was to raise awareness of the Sikh religion and to reduce the potential for misunderstandings and bias crimes against its followers. Wearing a turban is a mark of faith for the Sikh and the sight of the colorful headdress has, in the past, prompted some ignorant people to jump to the conclusion that Sikhs had something to do with 9/11 etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hopefully, after today’s event, more people will understand that.
